check 의 다양한 활용법을 알아보자

 

영어에서 check라는 단어는 정말 자주 보이고, 특히 전치사랑 붙으면 전혀 다른 뜻을 만들어내는 경우가 많다.

그냥 '확인하다' 정도로만 알고 있으면 실전 회화나 이메일 쓸 때 뜻이 헷갈릴 수밖에 없다. 그래서 이번 글에서는 check + 전치사 조합으로 만들어지는 표현을 한번 알아보자.

1. check in

의미: (호텔, 공항 등에) 체크인하다, 도착 신고하다

 

• We checked in at the hotel around 3 p.m. (우리는 오후 3시쯤 호텔에 체크인했다.)

• You must check in at least two hours before your flight. (비행 두 시간 전에는 체크인해야 한다.)

• I checked in using the airline's app. (항공사 앱으로 체크인했어.)

• She checked in at the front desk. (그녀는 프런트에서 체크인했다.)

2. check out

의미: 확인하다, 살펴보다 / (호텔 등에서) 체크아웃하다

 

• You should check out this new restaurant. (이 새 식당 한번 가봐.)

• I checked out a book from the library. (도서관에서 책 한 권 빌렸어.)

• We checked out of the hotel this morning. (오늘 아침에 호텔 체크아웃했어.)

의미: (상태를) 확인하다, 살펴보다

• I’ll check on the kids before going to bed. (자기 전에 애들 상태 좀 보고 올게.) • Can you check on the food in the oven? (오븐 안 음식 좀 봐줄래?) • He checked on his grandmother every weekend. (그는 주말마다 할머니를 살폈다.) • We need to check on the status of the delivery. (배송 상태를 확인해야 해.)

의미: (호텔, 병원 등) 체크인하다 / 조사하다

 

• They checked into the hotel late at night. (그들은 밤늦게 호텔에 체크인했다.)

• He was checked into the hospital yesterday. (그는 어제 병원에 입원했다.)

• We are checking into the cause of the fire. (화재 원인을 조사 중이다.)

• The police are checking into the suspect’s background. (경찰이 용의자의 배경을 조사 중이다.)

의미: 꼼꼼히 검토하다, 점검하다

 

• Please check over the contract before signing. (서명 전에 계약서를 꼼꼼히 확인해.)

• I need time to check over these documents. (이 서류들 좀 꼼꼼히 살펴볼 시간이 필요해.)

• He checked over the car before buying it. (그는 차를 사기 전에 꼼꼼히 점검했다.)

의미: ~의 상태를 점검하다, 조사하다

 

• The manager regularly checks up on his employees. (그 매니저는 직원들을 정기적으로 점검한다.) • I called to check up on my friend after his surgery. (수술 후 친구 상태 확인하려고 전화했어.) • They’re checking up on your references. (그들이 네 추천인들을 확인하고 있어.) • My mom always checks up on me when I’m sick. (내가 아프면 엄마가 항상 챙겨본다.)

의미: 나중에 다시 확인하다, 재확인하다

 

• I’ll check back with you tomorrow. (내일 다시 연락할게.)

• Can you check back later? (나중에 다시 확인해줄 수 있어?)

• Please check back in a few hours. (몇 시간 뒤에 다시 확인해줘.)

• We’ll check back once the update is complete. (업데이트 끝나면 다시 확인할게.)

의미: (사람/장소에) 잠깐 들르다, 확인차 방문하다

 

• I’ll check by your office this afternoon. (오늘 오후에 네 사무실 들를게.)

• She checked by the store to see if her order arrived. (주문한 물건 왔는지 보려고 가게에 들렀다.)

• He checked by the clinic for a follow-up. (추적 진료 때문에 병원에 잠깐 들렀다.)

의미: 빠르게 훑어보다, 대강 점검하다

의미: (사람과) 연락하다, 안부를 묻다, 확인하다

 

• I need to check in with my boss before leaving. (나가기 전에 상사한테 확인받아야 해.)

• He checked in with his mom during lunch. (점심시간에 엄마한테 연락했다.)
